Background

Founded in 2006, LimitState specializes in developing innovative and easy to use ultimate limit state analysis and design software products. Our products utilize robust methods (e.g. the Discontinuity Layout Optimization technique, developed by two of the company's founders - Matthew Gilbert and Colin Smith). The ethos of innovation and desire to continually push the boundaries is carried throughout the company, ensuring that LimitState remains at the technological leading edge.

Dr Matthew Gilbert : Managing Director & LimitState:RING Product Manager

A co-founder of LimitState, Dr Gilbert is a chartered civil engineer with a longstanding interest in limit state analysis and design methods, and also in the behaviour of masonry arch bridges - he originated the successful RING masonry arch analysis software, now used in over 40 countries worldwide.

Dr Colin Smith : Director & LimitState:GEO Product Manager

A co-founder of LimitState, Dr Smith is a geotechnical engineer who holds BA and PhD degrees in engineering from the University of Cambridge. As well as pushing forward the development of LimitState:GEO, he lectures on geotechnics at the University of Sheffield.

Wael Darwich : Chief Software Architect

A co-founder of LimitState, Wael Darwich is responsible for the development of the advanced software codebase on which all LimitState applications are based.

Dr Thomas Pritchard : R&D Engineer

Dr Pritchard is a structural engineer with many years experience of developing software applications for engineers. He has a special interest in applications utilizing layout optimization technology. He also currently teaches part-time at the University of Sheffield.

Iain Haslam : Software Engineer

Iain Haslam joined LimitState in early 2008. He has previously worked at Golder Associates where he played a leading role in developing software applications on behalf of the UK Environment Agency. These applications are now used extensively across the globe.

Dr Jim Goulding : Company Chairman

Following a 30 year career in the special steel and oil/gas industries, Jim Goulding is currently Business Manager at Sheffield University Enterprises Ltd (SUEL). He has helped facilitate the the development of a number of new companies.

Barry Skinner : Director

Barry Skinner is the founder and Managing Director of Bestech Systems Ltd, a company providing software, training and consultancy services to the civil engineering industry. Founded in 1991, Bestech Systems are a leading supplier of bridge engineering software in the UK and are the UK distributors for LimitState:RING 2.0.

Dr Andy Tyas : Consultant

A co-founder of LimitState, Dr Tyas co-developed the layout optimization procedures underpinning LimitState:GEO and other planned software products. Formerly a structural designer at Eastwood and Partners, he is currently MD of Blastech Ltd and he also lectures in structural engineering at the University of Sheffield.

Dr Gordon Oliver : Consultant

Gordon Oliver has a proven track record of establishing and developing high-technology software companies, co-founding LightWork Design in 1989 and later several other companies including NavisWorks (a company which develops software that allows construction professionals to view and coordinate 3D models - acquired by AutoDesk in 2007).
